Nora McGann is a 10th grade English teacher at G W Carver High School, located in the 9th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. She earned her Bachelors of Arts in English and French from Virginia Tech in 2013, and her Masters of Science in Education from Johns Hopkins in 2016. In 2013, McGann joined the Teach for America Corps, teaching in northern Louisiana. She joined TFA because she thought teaching was her clearest path to fight against injustice and strengthen communities. After more than a decade of teaching high school English, McGann believes growing strong readers and writers has the power to strengthen communities immediately and generationally. To that end, she founded an honors program at Carver that has become a pipeline for students in New Orleans’ 9th Ward to be accepted – and excel – at selective colleges across the country. She believes all students deserve the opportunity to think about complex ideas, and learn how to read and write in a way that prepares them for college success. Louisiana is home to generations of talented artists and writers; McGann knows it’s a gift and honor to keep bridging our past legacy with kids who make up the future. In recent years, she’s worked to develop fellow teachers in the art of teaching to accelerate reading and writing growth in New Orleans and throughout Louisiana. While in northern Louisiana, McGann earned Tensas teacher of the year, and has recently been recognized at the New Orleans Excellence in Teaching Awards.
