A hearty congratulations and a warm welcome to NoRedInk this morning, winners of the 2012 Citi Innovation Challenge!
Led by entrepreneurs Jeff Scheur and Leo Shmuylovich, NoRedInk creates content and tutorials from students’ favorite celebrities, friends, and personal interests to help them practice grammar and writing skills. The team will receive a $75,000 prize and the opportunity to join NewSchools Portfolio—the most innovative, promising, early-stage entrepreneurial organizations working to make a difference in public education for students from low-income communities. The two other teams competing in the Challenge—Pathbrite and ReadImagine—will split the remainder of the $100,000 Citi Innovation Challenge prize.
NoRedInk was created by Jeff Scheur, an English teacher at Whitney Young Magnet High School. After grading thousands of papers, Jeff realized that to truly improve his students’ grammar skills, they would need more practice than they were getting, immediate, differentiated feedback, and a fun, interactive way to practice and get better.
We’re thrilled to welcome NoRedInk into the NewSchools Portfolio, and look forward to working with Jeff and his team to bring this exciting tool to students, teachers, and schools across the country. Congratulations to all three great teams participating in this year’s Challenge!
