Human Capital
NewSchools believes that improving the human capacity within schools, districts, charter management organizations and other entrepreneurial organizations that serve children in low-income communities is an essential step toward closing the achievement gap.
Children need highly-qualified teachers who know their subjects deeply, understand how to differentiate instruction for a diverse population, and are able to use data to improve instruction for all students to be successful. Schools must also have principals who can create cultures of performance, serve as instructional leaders, and appropriately deploy resources to maximize student achievement. In addition, public school systems of all kinds – including charter management organizations and traditional districts – need people capable of creating and sustaining these high-performing organizations.
As we look ahead, NewSchools plans to expand its investments in entrepreneurial organizations that address key areas of need across the human capital landscape – particularly those programs that are anchored in practical experience in the classroom and that emphasize the use of data to continuously improve instruction. As such, NewSchools Fund III will support organizations that increase the number of quality teachers and leaders working in under-resourced schools, as well as those preparing talented managers and executives to lead traditional school districts and charter school organizations.
